Thank you for supporting Wikimedia South Africa, an independent non-profit organisation that supports Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects. Our job is to provide easy access to reliable information in South Africa.  We do this free of charge and without advertising. To do this we need to cover our costs with donations.

Your donations directly support some of the largest collaboratively-edited reference projects in the world, including Wikipedia, the fifth largest website and the largest encyclopedia ever compiled in the world.

Wikimedia is a global movement. The core of the work is done by hundreds of thousands of volunteers around the world. Many of whom are in South Africa. This volunteer community is supported by a network of organisations.  Wikimedia ZA is one of those organisations and is the officially recognised organisation for South Africa.

Wikimedia is the world's largest volunteer project. If everything is done by volunteers, why do we need money? We do not pay for edits - but money helps us engage with other entities, and do the accounting necessary to unlock travel bursaries for our volunteers - to meet and share with other volunteers in person. It also helps us unlock more donations and funds needed to organize events such as hackathons, editathons, and opportunities to support everyone who loves and keeps Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects up to date.

These are some of the activities we’re focused on right now:

Funds are managed by the board and allocations discussed during bi-weekly board meetings, everything minuted in the Board Meetings section of this wiki. Our priorities are:

* Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia
+
* Diverse representation of all cultures and languages
* Wikicommons, a multimedia database
+
* Support of local language Wikipedias such as Afrikaans, Sotho, Pedi, Xhosa and Zulu
* WikiSource, a free online reference source
+
* Awareness and easy access to Wikipedia in South Africa
* WikiData, a online interlinked database
+
* Workshops about Wikipedia

+
* Travel bursaries to Wikipedia events
While we do not pay for edits, funds are used primarily for scholarships to support prolific editors to attend events and to support editors and volunteers in other ways such as with small grants that will allow them to grow these projects. Funds are managed by the board and allocations discussed during bi-weekly board meetings.

Donate to Wikimedia South Africa

As Wikimedia founder Jimmy Wales put it: “Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge.” Help us help you make it happen with a donation.

What do you plan to do with my donation?

Wikimedia is the world's largest volunteer project. If everything is done by volunteers, why do we need money? We do not pay for edits - but money helps us engage with other entities, and do the accounting necessary to unlock travel bursaries for our volunteers - to meet and share with other volunteers in person. It also helps us unlock more donations and funds needed to organize events such as hackathons, editathons, and opportunities to support everyone who loves and keeps Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects up to date.

Funds are managed by the board and allocations discussed during bi-weekly board meetings, everything minuted in the Board Meetings section of this wiki. Our priorities are:

  • Diverse representation of all cultures and languages
  • Support of local language Wikipedias such as Afrikaans, Sotho, Pedi, Xhosa and Zulu
  • Awareness and easy access to Wikipedia in South Africa
  • Workshops about Wikipedia
  • Travel bursaries to Wikipedia events

The easiest way is via Payfast. Click on the Payfast button below to make a recurring donation.
